specifically, between safari and opera, though general discussion is fine. i'd like to know which is best (i.e. less chance of fucking up a transaction) when making online purchases with credit cards. god knows there are some unreliable payment systems out there.

Internet explorer 6 PC. That's all they test it for.
The only way to guarantee anything on the internet (besides geeky nerd sites) is by using IE. But I haven't had any problems with Firefox

Sadly it's true, IE is the one that will work for sure.
Just make sure that you don't ever use IE for any other kind of browsing, that way to keep out anything that you don't want.
Or use IE tab for firefox.
That will work too.
