DOS question

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-15 5:52

A friend of mine's OS is corrupt and wishes to backup some important documents and such; but the problem is that only DOS is accessable.

My question is:
It is possible to transfer files to an external USB device (such as a stick) via DOS?
As i'm thinking you would need the device manager software to be able to read the USB stick (ie: the OS itself), and DOS itself wouldnt be able to recognise the device.

Any advice?

ACTUALLY, if your BIOS has a "legacy USB support" option, your USB drives will show up in DOS, if this option is enabled.  BIOS has USB->DOS drivers built in on newer BIOSes.  (Don't remove them while DOS is running, though).

If that doesn't work, check out DUSE.

However, DOS will not work with NTFS, which is what your HD is probably formatted in if you use XP

HOWEVER, HOWEVER, you can get NTFSDOS from Sysinternals, install it in a DOS boot floppy, and read the necessary data.

Download and burn a FreeSBIE cd. To make things easier, put the USB stick in before the OS boots, then just browse it like a normal drive, transfer stuff to it, or burn it to CD with K3B or whatever.

Don't change these.
