So I'm a newb with SATA, and I just received my Seagate 320 gb drive. I had no clue what the fuck I was doing. Windows wouldn't install. So I learned I needed a floppy drive with drivers on it. Too bad I didn't have a floppy drive installed... had to get one.
Eventually, I got Windows to install. I tried to transfer files from my old hard drive to the new one, and I got more BSODs. No longer were they consistent like my previous 0x0000007B stops or whatnot... they're random now.
I looked up my mobo specs and I see that the SATA on my mobo doesn't support 3.0 gb/s transfer speeds. Would leaving the hard drive jumper set at 3.0 gb/s cause these blue screens? I mean, Windows ended up installing...

I don't usually do things like that, so I don't know if it would cause bluescreens. It might. Also, try A disk w/ SP2 slipstreamed.

If you don't have the slipstreamed SP2 disk, try using drivers that came with your motherboard for SATA drives or get them online. That's what I had to do to set up my SATA drives on my gigabyte mobo. I think you have to hit f6 when is asks if you want to install SCSI drivers then have it point to your floppy where you have the drivers.

OP here... the Windows I was trying to install was XP with SP2 slipstreamed. The drivers in it did not work (I got consistent blue screen errors). I had to indeed, get a floppy drive, go to another computer, get drivers, and reinstall.
The problem didn't end there, though. As soon as I tried installing the nForce drivers for my nForce3 chipset, I got blue screen errors again.
Eventually, I narrowed it down to the IDE drivers in the package that caused the BSODs. That didn't make much sense, so I did some reading, and decided to try something.
RAID was enabled for my SATA drives. I only have the one drive, so I disabled RAID, and went back. The IDE installed fine.
Weird thing though, Windows SEEMED stable, so I went to eat dinner. Right as I come back in, the computer is in the process of rebooting. I'm worried.

Now that Windows is installed, have you tried reinstalling the SATA drivers? I had all kinds of problems with a Windows install on a SATA hard drive because the disk the drivers were on was fucked up and the drivers were corrupted.
I've also noticed that some newer motherboard BIOSes have this "PATA emulation" thing that makes the SATA controller appear to the OS as another standard IDE controller, making the extra drivers unneccessary (at least when installing the OS itself). You might give that a try, if you have that option available to you.
