bandwidth monitoring

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-22 20:26

Hello, I'll be moving into my college dorm tomorrow and found out that we're limited to 2 gb up/down per day restarting at midnight. If we go over this we get a warning then the banhammer. Any programs to reccomend that will allow me to monitor my daily bandwidth usage(for windows, please)?

jesus christ, that sucks. i would have to limit my usage if i was limited to 2 gigs/hour. i suggest living off campus next year.

wtf? Why do they bother banning you? Couldn't they just cap the up/down?

No idea... I'll be living off campus next year, but I have to live with it for now. And as to why they don't cap it... no idea either.

Here's an idea: Use your roommate's connection while he's not around and then use yours when he's in the room.

What the fuck D:

I pay for 2 GB/month.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-23 8:00

So you can check your emails very fast now ?

I pay $50 a month for a 15 megabit connection and unenforced caps (I think if I download more than a terrabyte per month they have the legal right to suspend my account but probably won't do it unless it's creating a problem.)

Holy hell!
Limited data quantities? In bradband century? Where tha hell do you live?
I get 12mbit without any restriction for about 45 bucks per month.

good deal
i paid $40/mo for a 4 meg connection. i probably snagged 1.2 terabytes/month off of that.

its a university. they tend to do stupid things. mine entirely blocked the bittorrent protocol.

thx... and the university is in downtown chicago... I ran a test and got 33 mbit down/6 mbit up.. shame i cant use it to its full potential :(

All lies, my college has a gig limit every 5 days, during the school year I used to exceed that every single day, no one ever said shit to me.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-23 17:32

my roommate only ever got yelled at when he took up about 18% of the schools bandwidth over a 5 day period.

If your school does not have software with which to enforce this bandwidth cap automatically then they do not have software or personnel who can monitor your bandwidth effectively, either. You can take this rule with a grain of salt; it is a rule in effect so that if you are doing something 'bad' with the Internets your school can cut you off with the convenient excuse of "he was downloading too much and breaking the rules" without having to say one of their students was downloading massive amounts of CP and getting negative press

mine has a .5 gig upload limit per day.  i've never heard of anyone being contacted about hitting it too frequently, but once you get there your connection slows down to the point where even irc is unusable.

oh, and depending how your network is set up, you might be able to spoof your mac address so the network gives you another ip and another up/down limit

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-27 4:32

just change ur mac every .5 sec

I did something like that at my school.  At 12:30am, all of the accounts were checked, and any account with a hardware address that had downloaded more than 2 gigs that day was limited.  If you unregistered a hardware address, it wasn't checked, so I just had to unregister and spoof my hardware address once per day.

well... apparantly they combine the upload and download here, since i just got my warning about going 100 mb over the 2 gig limit :/ i dont think a mac spoof would work either since they track by the account you're logged in from, not the hardware.

They could, but I geuss they don't know enough to actually do that.

How do you even do that in 5 days?

He was downloading CP from the guy who asked to have his filesystem encrypted, had hacked into his box
