VNC help

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-21 23:02

I just downloaded the VNC server program and I have no fucking idea how to use it.  Can anyone help me out?  I want to run a server to acess remotely, like from a lab in school.

A) it's insecure and harder to secure
B) ports

There's not much to configure and play with. You run the server as a service and run the viewer on the machine you want to access the server with. Use the same port and type in the IP. If it doesn't work the port isn't open. It would help if we knew what VNC you used.

There are several free ones, which one are you using?
You need your IP and port. http://myip:5800 is not a valid address.
You need a viewer, Firefox can't do that unless there's a viewer plugin for it which there shouldn't be.

VNC servers run a HTTP server on port 58xx, which gives you a Java applet that functions as the client.

Ugghh
Lurk moar. A lot more. And I don't mean on 4chan. Learn more about what is going on with VNC. If you think Firefox can act as a viewer, you probably shouldn't be using VNC. At the very least make sure to use a strong password for the VNC server so you don't turn your machine into a public terminal begging to be abused. You need a client program to connect. If you are using RealVNC (I haven't seen anything specific mentioned, so I am just going throw info at you) it should have come with the client program if you downloaded the server.

"myip" is not supposed to be a literal hostname, but an indication of what one should enter in a destination for (a web client of some kind?) and where. Though the clients I have used do not use http, and all the is needed it [ip address]:[port number]
TL;DR: Fail.

Don't change these.
