Windows won't start up... sometimes.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-16 9:27

I get the following message and after I turn on my computer:

--
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
--

This is the second time this has happened. It happened last week and I just reinstalled Windows and hoped I wouldn't have to deal with this crap again.

I eventually did get the computer to boot into Windows after I reset a few times. WTF?

:D
Delete the \System32 folder.

What about checking your hard drive with chkdsk?

How about installing Linux... better try www.opera.com first though, just to see if it fixes your problems, www.opera.com once fixed my processor when I forgot to add 300 fans to cool it to 800^oC.

Opera sucks sure there's an ebuild for opera but it just get dropped to /opt, it's statically linked, and it's CLOSED SOURCE, which means that it is a BINARY package.

/comp sucks sure we know a lot about computers but we're smart asses, we're on 4chan, and a lot of people ask STUPID QUESTIONS, which means that they usually have NO SENSE OF HUMOR.

In some seriousness, now that I re-read that post and realize you're not just someone who actually deleted their \system32 folder, try chkdisk/scandisk.
After that runs, try sfc (if you is runnin WinXP).

It sounds a bit odd that it's happening intermittently - usually it either happens or doesn't. This leads me to suspect your hard disk or interface is fucking up (or possibly a failing PSU causing faults on either or both of these). I fixed a similar problem where Windows kept dying then reviving by backing up the hard disk to another (*not* another partition), low-level formatting the disk and then copying everything back. I'd suspect a failing hard disk first of all.

lol the usual /comp

Anyway, chkdsk is the best way to go. get you Xp disc, if you have one, go the recover console, type chkdsk /p or /r, forgot which one, then when its done, type fixboot, type yes or w/e when that is done type restart, should solve you problem temporary.

Tips: disable IDE Bus Mastering, upgrade your BIOS, install latest Service Pack.
