installing firefox on linux.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-11 5:38

Hello,

I recently installed linux onto my computer, and I can't figure out how to get firefox working on it. I downloaded the linux verision of firefox to a jumpdrive on my ibook, then plugged it into my pc, and extracted the firefox folder in the tar.gz file.

Now what? I now have a folder named 'Firefox' and in it are all the components Firefox comes with, but how do I launch the application?

O_o

What distro are you using? Why didn't you use its native package management system?

And have you downloaded binaries or source code?

Mandrake 10.1.

I double clicked on the tar.gz file, it opened up a screen and asked me where I would like to extract it. All that was in it was the firefox folder.

10.1 is 2 years old, so you might want to try something more recent.

Anyway, you should be using your package manager that comes with Mandrake rather than downloading and installing stuff yourself. It helps you by keeping everything at the right versions and ensuring you have everything you need to run a program.

You'll be able to do something along the lines of "urpmi firefox" (urpmi is Mandrake's package manager) or "urpmi mozilla-firefox" in a terminal window. "urpmi -y" will find the exact name.

Make that "urpmi -y firefox" in the last sentence :p

Old Linux is OOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD.

1) Get openSUSE, Fedora Core 5, or Ubuntu instead.

2) Look on their sites for a guide on how to use the package manager.

Firefox is included in OpenSUSE 10.1

In Deban 3.1r2 (Sarge) typing "apt-get install firefox" (without quptes) as root also usually does the trick.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-13 22:57

there should be a file named firefox inside the extracted folder, just double-click on it

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-14 15:14

fail for using the oldest version of linux you could find

meh. I already had it on disk. didn't wanna bother downloading anything. lol. but it keeps failing on me, so I'm just gonna switch to Ubuntu later tonight. :P

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-15 7:08

there should be a firefox binary (or shell script) for you to execute in the directory you extracted.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-16 2:37

you shouldn't be installing firefox from a tarball if your distro has it packaged, it will only ruin dependencies if you want to install a package like the mplayer-plugin or whatever

Firefox' binaries are a godsend, everybody should build their shit like this. Unpack and run; no libraries to mess with, no shit because it sets LDPATH to the application directory as the OS should do for you.

Distros suck as they usually spread your files across a myriad of shitty illogical directories and never update to major versions.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-16 9:04

>>13
you are using the wrong distro.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-16 19:26

Distros suck sure there're ebuilds for distros but they just get spread over thirty fucking directories including but not limiting to /bin, /etc, /share, /var, /var/lib, /lib, /include, /usr, /usr/share, /usr/lib, /usr/share/lib, /usr/bin and /opt, they're dependent on each other as fuck, and they're FHS-BASED, which means that it is a PIECE OF SHIT OF A MESS.

If this is the wrong distro, please link to a sane distro that install everything where it goes, i.e. something like /Software/<packagename> . (Hint: My favourite package managers are cp and rm.) I know of GoboLinux, but last time I checked it didn't have many prebuilt packages and still had a hidden, underlying FHS piece of shit.

you fail for not understanding the directory structure

it is set up for multiple users get your fucking head around that

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-17 2:27

>>16
/home is set for multiple users and I got my fucking head around that just fine. The rest is set for fail and lose; it's not that I don't understand what they tried to achieve; it's that I understand it and realize it's stupid and a fucking mess.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-17 12:35

/usr/share

/usr/bin

/usr/sbin

/var/log

it's all set up for multiple users. Get your fucking head around it you are a moron

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-17 15:31

/Software/<product_name> also works for multiple users you fucking moron. There's no need to split the application resources like you were playing cards. All you need is user directories (/home), and a common directory for shared resources (like libraries). Who the fuck cares if it's a "binary file", "platform-independent file", etc.? What kind of retarded classification is that? And why the fuck does /usr/local exist? Shit I build or install myself is not different from shit that came with my distro. No need to throw all the fucking shit together in directories like /etc or /usr/bin either, it pisses me off when I try to locate everything belonging to a single application.

The filesystem model is wonderful but it has a limitation - you can only classfy stuff by one criteria. FHS angers me because it classifies shit by type, instead of by product, and everything gets all mixed together. So why don't we create a /usr/local/images and /usr/local/sounds directories to spread games data files too? This is just insane.

Now you'll say what if you want to backup variable files vs. binaries, move configuration, or all that shit. First, that's more oriented towards 1970s shared time / batch processing crap than personal workstations/mediastations/fapstations/gamestations/stupidstations (wait, these run Windows) of today. Second, you're trying to save half an hour when selecting shit to backup (plus you still have to make a selection when backing up files in the ever contaminated FHS) and paying for it all the fucking time with an insane directory structure. You also waste more time than you wanted to save. Third, you can also create /Data, /Config, /Log, and all that INSIDE fucking software packages then collect whatever you want with a simple command.

Fuck you.

Let's say you want to backup all logs.  How is going through all program subdirectories and copying all log directories (assuming that each application writer decides to call the directory 'log') easier than "cp -r /var/log /var/log~" ??? HMMMM?

Besides, you miss ONE IMPORTANT POINT of the FHS.  YOU CAN MAKE /BIN, /SBIN, and /USR READ ONLY and it DRASTICALLY INCREASES SECURITY.  And, since variable data isn't mixed up with binary files, NOTHING BREAKS.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-18 0:28

And /opt, for your CLOSED SOURCE BINARY PACKAGES

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-18 7:05

>>24
/opt/ sucks sure there's opera but it just get dropped to /dev/null, it's for statically linked packages, and it's for CLOSED SOURCE packages, which means that it is a BINARY directory.

./configure
make
make install

  GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

yeah ok if you want a big mess like in windows, why not just use it and stop bitching?

Firefox and Thunderbird binaries are one of the very, very few sane distributions. They are simple, work by existing or not existing, no dependencies, no bullshit, and no FHS, and they fix Linux' LD_LIBRARY_PATH stupidity of "." meaning the current directory and not the executable's directory through a script, as everybody should.

To install a sane package, all you need to do is:

~> cd /Software
/Software> tar xzvf path_and_name_of_sane_package.tar.gz

To run a sane package:

/Software/<sane_package_directory_name>/<sane_package_launcher>

e.g. /Software/Firefox/firefox

To uninstall a sane package:

rm -rf /Software/<sane_package_name>

Windows sucks sure it has a saner directory structure to some extent, but it just get dropped to the registry, it's unnecessarily complex and enterprise, and it's full of DRM, which means that it has software AIDS.
