Baldur's Gate 1, BG2, Neverwinter Nights? Or perhaps Fallout 1/2?
Or another game (guess you get the picture what kind of game I want)?

>>4 is a retard.
Fallout and Baldur's Gate are superior game series. Get both of them, but skip the Neverwinter Nights crap.

I downloaded NWN demo, it seems very complete at character construction, but I didn't like how the action goes in battles. Does it get better with bigger enemy groups and higher level skills?

I played lots of Diablo 1 and 2, but D2 and its expasion gets really boring after a while for the considerably small pool of skills and repetitive enemies and uninteresting areas. Does Baldur's Gate suffer from this same syndrome? How good is it to control various characters at once?

Temple of Elemenal Evil.
God when it comes to battles, ..., and that's about it, I guess.
BG is just a slightly more interesting Diablo2. But if you've played D2, BG won't have enough new stuff to warrant getting it.
NWN has good campaigns. Lots of quality usermade content, including the PRC pack (nwnprc.netgamers.co.uk). The official campaign does start you out with retardedly simple battles, yes. It is designed to be accesible to people who have never even heard of D&D before, and get them used to turn based RPG combat, so it is more of a tutorial for the rest of the game.
Neverwinter Nights is an unbelievably awesome game. I couldn't tell you how much of my life was thrown away playing it... ahh good memories I'll never forget.
If you want a sweet RPG with great content and online fun, go for Neverwinter Nights.

Baldur's Gate, hand's down. Make sure you get some mods though - they really add to the experience.
Yeah - you can play the original BG using the BG2 engine now for better graphics, and there are a couple of extra characters you can add in to the game.
