Static Ip on Ubuntu

Since the ubuntu forums are down, i wanted to ask if anyone knows how to set up a static ip on ubuntu 6.06. When I go to the terminal and type in "ifconfig" i get:

Before the forums went down I was reading this was the info i needed to set up the static ip. However when I go to put in the static ip info i have to fill in:

ip address:
subnet mask:
gateway address:

I don't know what to fill in since I did not understand the info I got beforehand. I am on optimum online and have a linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G.

Try with the IP and subnet mask specified in the output from the deprecated tool that was called "ifconfig."

For the gateway address, enter the IP of your router.  You can probably find it out by doing a traceroute to some host.

Ex:
% traceroute goatse.cx
traceroute to goatse.cx (203.119.12.63), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets
 1  192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1)  1.163 ms  1.112 ms  1.098 ms
 fap fap fap

The IP will probably be the first one.

If that doesn't work, go kick your router around a little.
