amd price drop

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-27 3:17

i'm sure you've all heard of this, they're phasing out the 939 socket, along with many amd2 socket cpu's (i'm not sure if the entire amd2 socket is being phased out, but w/e you get the picture) and prices are dropping like 46%. ANYWAYS, i currently have an amd athlon64 x2 3800+. i was wondering, when the prices drop and everything's like 160 and 300 bucks, should i spring for the 4400? maybe even the 4600? and would it make much of a differnce between the two? i'd rather not mess with over clocking (now), and i dont mind putting in the money for a new cpu, but only if it'll be any differnt. i dont run a lot of stuff, mostly games and photoshop and such, so it's not like i'm hosting servers on my pc. i just want a good fast cpu for cheap, and if the 4x00's are coming down to 300 bucks i'm all for getting one. so, yeah, should i bother getting a 4x00? and if so, which one would be better to get, 4200, 4400 or 4600?

I wish the 4000+ would come down, it's basically an AM2 Toledo. But AMD are only lowering the prices on their most expensive Toledo/San Diego parts, the low-mid range ones are still the same price they've been for like a year now. The 3800+, 4200+, 4600+, 5000+ are all the same, just different multipliers, no other difference. Overclocking a 3800+ is the same as having a 4200+, etc.

Not really that bad a move at the time, since AMD will soon stop supplying the 939 Opties, and they not likely to drop the price on them any more.

Don't change these.
