cd drive rattle

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-13 18:14

Sometimes the cd drive on my notebook has a rattle when I put a CD in and doesn't recognize the disc.  other times it doesn't rattle and it's fine.  this seems to occur after I've been carrying it around for a while.

Is there something loose inside the drive I could easily fix?  I don't want to replace it until ultimate failure if possible.

Apply a light coating of rubber cement to the top surface of a CD (make sure it's one you don't want to use again!!), then pop it into the drive.  The glue will not hit any part of the workings as long as they are in place, but anything that isn't will be pulled out when you eject the CD.  Then you can take the drive apart and put the part that came out back into place.

Depends on what the rattle sounds like.  If it sounds like a loose part flying around then do something like what >>4 said.  If the rattle is coming from one place and sounds kinda weird, it just may be the cd-rom seeking a lot trying to read the volume descriptor, and either the CD, the drive, or both are damaged.

Don't change these.
