AM2 or 939?

Name: ZixH !02oUoQsyWk 2006-07-04 17:41

I'm building a computer for the first time, using an Athlon 64 X2 4200+, an nVidia  (eVGA) Geforce 7600GS (512MB, GDDR2, etc), and I'm wondering, should I go for Socket 939 or Socket AM2?  I'm hearing that its not worth the cash, but I'm not seeing much price difference in anything but the Memory.

What do you guys think?

AMD has promised to deliver a new anti-hyperthreading technology for AM2. It means, that a dual-core AM2 processor can emulate a single-core processor with very high efficiency when running single-threaded apps (most games, for example). There has been no performance figures yet, but I'd guess that with the new technology (which should work only with a bios upgrade & new cpu driver) you can run single-threaded apps 1.5-1.8x faster than with S939 processors, which will not support this feature :P

939 is being obsoleted, just so you know. AM2s use DDR2, which for AMD does not perform as well as 939 equivalents for CPUs under 2.4-2.6GHz. An overclocked 4400+ or 4800+ is your best bet, unless you go dual core, then an OCed 3700+/4000+ is your best bet (assunming you don't have the cash for FX). Also, for the $$$, the 7600GT 256mb might be more worth it that a 512 mb 7600GS.

775 conroe motherfucker

Conroe has already failed. All the benchmarks were fakes, it's just another pathetic intel refresh.

How about an overclocked Pentium D805?

I have nothing against Intel, myself, but right now I want an AMD-based computer.

In anycase, I'm gonna wait on the processor till Conroe is released (I'm hearing massive price drops are coming.  *rolls eyes*), but I'm not sure about the graphics card much anymore.  About how long off is the release of nVidia's 8000 Series?

If you are waiting always the biggest and greatest, you'll never get anything. I'd go for am2 atm, coz while waiting for next things to come by I must use my old rig or no rig at all.

Uh, probably pretty far off, since the 7000 series was only released recently...

I suspect there may be still more mid-range 7000 cards to be released, see 6000 seriews -> the 6600GT, and 6800GS/XT were released well after the 6800GT/Ultra cards.

They just released the 7950s(two 7900GTXs attatched to each other and made to think they are one card running in a sort of private mini-SLI) recently. The 7000 series will be new for at least the rest of this year, though ATI hasn't done a whole lot since the X1900XTX, but most likely they'll just release another card that is either an ATI "multiple Cards in one unit" card or a "look it's the X1950XTX Special UberLeet Platinum Edition! You can pretend it's not just a regular X1900XTX with a factory overclock!". Just like every other year. These new lines of cards are mostly just last years offerings with some having smaller process techs, and more pipelines.

Details released to OEMs suggest that AMDs upcoming AM3-based CPUs will both fit into and work with motherboards using the existing AM2 socket.  This is good news for users that have motherboards supporting the AM2 socket because they will be able to switch to AM3 CPUs without having to upgrade the rest of the hardware (in particular the motherboard and RAM).
