Single Core vs. Dual Core

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-24 21:55

Dear /comp/ I'm building a REALLY cheap gaming computer. I have all the components short of the mobo, CPU, and RAM just laying around my house. (I don't how many random drives I have in my room alone.)

Would I benefit more from a fast single core or a slower dual core machine. I know most games aren't threaded for multi-cores. Would the benefit be greater enough just to go with a cheapo Pentium D 2.66 vs. a faster single core machine.

I already have a dual core Mac Mini so STFU.

Love my AMD 3800 X2, go dual core my man.

Get the best of two worlds and go dual CPU.

get the 3800 X2 AFTER the price cut.  Its gonna bring those suckers do to like $180.  Price cuts gonna be late June, when the conroe comes out.

Don't buy a Pentium D unless you're doing video encoding...

Yeah, I was thinking about holding out for the major price cuts later on this month and in July. Then again I could just sell my Mini and monitor if Apple comes out with an updated iMac. I could use a free iPod.

I'm going to agree and say wait for the Conroe line and the AMD price cuts.

Pentium D's are serious oerclockers. Most of them will do a 1GHz OC on air. Single core A64 still gets the best performance on gaming.

Don't change these.
