ive been using sony 8x (14.99 gbp)

and then i came acorss maxell 16x dvd (12.99 gbp)

is it wise to change for the lower price?

Maxell is not as good as it used to be (could've been Taiyo Yuden, now only Ritek or CMC), and Sony is better than it was (formerly Ricoh, now possibly TY). Whichever you go with, burn no faster than 4x.
