Any recommendations? I'm not looking for a top-of-the-line system, just at least 1GHZ and with at least a 3 hour battery life.

Pretty much anything using the Centrino Pentium M processor will get you about 3 hours. Becareful though. It's not the Pentium 4 M or the Celeron M processor but the Pentium M.
You should be able to find a low end Centrino Pentium M based laptop for under $1000. I recommend Toshiba and Lenovo > all.
