Dell XPS m1210

Name: Ghost 2006-06-16 23:16

This looks like a pretty sweet laptop (considering the size) and would be perfect for taking notes and being portable and whatnot. My concern is with the GPU though, as it's not exactly a dedicated GPU. It's a 256mb nVidia 7400 Turbocache.  I think the split is 64/192 for dedicated/onboard respectively. I plan on speccing mine at 1.83GHz and 1gb ram. (native res is 1280x800).

Might be a longshot, but does anyone here know what kinda gaming can be done with those specs and GPU? I know it can run HL2 on high settings, but then again, HL2 isn't very demanding. I don't expect to be able to run Oblivion at max or anything (if at all) ... nothing "hardcore", but just wanting to know what kind of general gaming perfprmance to expect out of the XPS m1210 for say, games released within the last few years.  (Fable, Doom 3, BF2, etc).

Thanks much

The XPS is a category of Dell's specifically gaming-oriented machines. I don't understand any of your technical mumbo-jumbo, but I would advise not purchasing notebooks for the purpose of playing the latest games. However, I believe it would do a satisfactory job with games released over the past few years.

Now, please respond to my 2GB thread.

My intention isn't exactly to play the latest games, but I'm looking for a laptop so I can take notes. A new lappy would also become my new main computer, so that's why I ask the gaming question.

I think that at 4.37 lbs standard, the XPS M1210 is the best laptop  to carry around constantly, to take notes on, in addition to being a multimedia powerhouse. However, you're definitely going to have to sacrifice the most high end graphics cards on behalf of portability. You have to prioritize. Personally, all I would use my M1210 for would be to play SNES ROM's. If you want your notebook to become your primary PC, then you have to look for desktop replacements, 8-10 pounders, HUEG LIEK XBOX--those have the best graphics. However, you mentioned notes, and that won't be possible with HUEG notebooks.

Well, it does fine running the more recent games. Here's an awesome sight I stumbled upon today:

It's great for thorough reviews on other popular laptops too.

I hope I helped too :D
Be sure to read the entire article. I don't know shit about what I'm talking about, but this fellow sure does. By the time you're done reading, you will have fallen in love with the M1210. Also the forums are fantastic too--boards for each manufacturer, insider discounts, and Notebook Buying FAQ's and threads. It's an excellent site.

I posted another question in my thread, btw >_>

I've done nothing but pore over Notebookforums.com for the past month ;) It's a great site. Unfortunately, the XPS m1210 doesn't have a lot of user reviews posted yet.

in response to #5:
I was looking at an Alienware Area-51 m5500. That's a 15.4" screen and would weigh less than 10lbs. The base video card is a 128mb ATi Mobility x700. Despite being the GPU for the base model, this is no card to shake a stick at. Still, I decided a few days ago that it would be too large since the desks in my tiny english classes are rather small. (plus they're ridiculously expensive especially if I get it delivered to Canada)

Again, I'm not looking for a super high end graphics card anyway (too expensive). Hell, someone was able to run F.E.A.R. at a playable FPS on med settings with the m1210. http://www.jrin.net/?page_id=81

I wonder how it would handle Oblivion (just out of curiousity) - the F.E.A.R. engine is a resource hog, so it'd be hard to tell just from F.E.A.R. play tests.
