recommended graphics card for

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 18:56

Finally upgrading PC for both games & photoshop.  Bought new motherboard, CPU & RAM, need a graphics card now.  Recommendations??  I'm very noobish doing this, and I don't have too much to spend, $200 is my limit but I'm most comfortable buying something around $130 or so.

OS: Windows XP

CPU:
Intel Pentium D Dual-Core Processor 805 Box;
2 x 1MB L2 Cache; 2.66GHz; 533FSB

Motherboard: ECS RC410L/800-M (V2.0)
Support Intel Pentium 4 HT Processor 800MHz FSB and DDR2 667

RAM:
Two "1 gig" sticks of RAM;
DD2 2GB PC5300 Patriot (2x1gb) Speed 667MHz

I'm trying to buy things at a budget, gaming isn't that important to me.
The CPU & Motherboard were bought at a combo price, both for $129.  Plus $35 Warranty for them.
The two sticks of RAM were $139 for both with a $20 Mail-in Rebate.
This should give you an idea of my price range and what I'm willing to spend for a graphics card.  I bought them last night at Fry's on sale, have the reciept still and they're all unopened. I can return them within 14 no problem, if you guys can point out a better deal, but I prefer stores I can walk into rather than online retailers I have to wait weeks for things to happen.

Again I'm looking for a good graphics card that'll let me play games nicely.

Thank you very much

OH yeah, this is alittle odd, but do any good graphics cards come with component inputs?  So I can plug my PS2/Gamecube/xbox into my computer with and capture images?  I'm considering doing this, thank you very much.

Hmm ATI X1800 maybe?

there are a fucking plethora of cards that come with component OUTPUT.. so you can output to an hdtv.

but if you want a card with component INPUT??? expect to pay 300-400 for a card that does that

you can try digitalconnection.com
but be prepared to withdraw against your 401k.

Yes.
Or the latest uber-priced card by Sparkle, who do outrageously good but disgustingly expensive high-end VGAs.

I've got a GigaByte ATI Radeon X800 XL <insert stupid alphanumeric jumble here> which was stupidly expensive, outdated before I even installed it and could only be found in one online store out of all the places I searched. It does HDRL nicely, though, which would pay for itself if my stupid onboard sound chipset didn't prevent Half-Life 2 from working properly.

Moral: don't pay extra for a motherboard with an onboard Creative Labs 24bit Live! chipset if you plan on playing games. It hates them all.

YES I AM MORE INTERESTED IN THE COMPONENT INPUT ISSUE

Component Input or Output? If it's component out, most of the current and last-gen video cards will include an adapter that gives you component and S-video out.

Personal preference here of course, but if I were buying a card right now it'd probably be a 7600GT based card. Right in your price range and generally good performance. If you want to utilize the AVIVO graphics quality goodness, then get an ATI, but that's really all I've seen that I like from em.

In the $200 price range, you won't find anything that's got component input. Forget it.

All-In-Wonder x1300 might be up your alley since it will have at least s-video and RCA inputs. It will play some games ok too and will run around $110-$140. At about $200 right on the dot, you can get the AIW X1600 instead.

If you want more performance and your not worried about inputs then you can get a Geforce 7600GT or a regular Radeon X1800 GTO which are about equal in terms of performance and they're both in the upper-middle end for about $200.

If you're more interested in saving your money, you can get a Radeon X1600pro for $100-$130. If you'd prefer a Geforce, you can find 7600GS for about $120-$150.

As you can see, your options are open to you.

Note: All prices are guestimates.
