Weird outlook issue

When using Office Outlook 2003, normally, when you delete something, it puts a line through it, and deletes it when you select purge. I've been having problems with it randomly just deleting things outright.  Sometimes it will just randomly switch between the two over a period of time without even restarting the program. Any advice?
