The only thing I can think of that this system will be truely good for is encoding audio and video and other such CPU intensive tasks. For gaming, the graphics are a serious bottleneck and for anything else, it's overkill and a waste of money.

If the most you're looking to do is some audio and video related tasks, this will be fine. It's also good that it comes with a legal copy of Windows XP.

This is a better deal since it comes with a 19" LCD monitor. The graphics are less but if you were considering the last computer, then you weren't going to play many games anyways.

Personally, I avoid Futureshop. Their return policy is good if you don't mind the 1-3 month wait to get your computer back.

If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, I recommend checking out:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/

There is a good pre-built SLI gaming machine for $1049. They fullfill a 1 year in-store warrenty. The only downsides are that you'll have to come up with a copy of Windows XP yourself and there is a 5 day waiting period.

If you don't mind a little DIY, they have system packages available as well. Even further DIY, you can build the entire system yourself from scratch.

Ok I just built a good, dual core gaming computer for $811 CAD.

All component prices are from http://www.canadacomputers.com/ and are rounded up to the nearest dollar.

Intel Pentium 805D 2.66ghz Dual Core - $160
XFX nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB - $240
OCZ DDR2 PC2-4200 533MHz Value Series 1GB (2X512MB) - $102
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA NCQ 3.0Gb/s 160GB 8MB Cache - $83
322E Black Case 400w w/ Windows, USB - $20
SilverStone SST-ST405 400W Low Acoustic (Silent) Power Supply - $57
Asus P5ND2-SLI - $109
LiteOn SHW-160P6S Black DVD+R/RW 16x8x DVD-R/RW 16x6x DVD+/-R DL 8x4x DVD Writer Bulk Pack - $40

Total: $811

I will note that you would have to replace the powersupply that comes with that case with the one I added in here.

You will also have to order some of these parts. This still leaves you with $188 to buy an OS or any extra components if that's nessicary for you.

The speed on this is lower than the futureshop computer but the increased graphics card would easily nullify that once you got around to gaming.

"The speed on this is lower than the futureshop computer but the increased graphics card would easily nullify that once you got around to gaming. "

And that there is the infamous D 805, which almoast beats the best of Athlon dual cores and Pentium EEs, after you overclock it (if you're lucky)
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/

Oh yea and takes enough power after that to make 70s computing cabinets with their huge power cords look like the forefront of power economy. Forget a 400W power supply.

400watts is enough as long as you don't go overclocking the fuck out of it.

If he wants to overclock it, he will want to buy the following:

Antec SmartPower 2.0 450 Watt PSU - $78
Zalman CNPS9500-Cu-LED Heatsink with Fan - $75
Corsair XMS 2 TWIN2X 2x512MB DDR2 667Mhz PC5400 - $142

Naturally, he doesn't need to buy the other PSU or the memory from my previous list but this will increase his cost by $136 up to $947.

This should allow for an overclock to 3.33ghz with relative ease and a possible overclock of up to 3.8ghz.

If he wants a legal OS included, this will push this system above the $1000 price tag. I know most people pirate Windows but there are some just like keeping things legal.

Even without the overclock, this system is still a very quick gaming and multimedia PC.

Don't change these.
