Domain Name Registration

Can someone explain to me why it is that domain names cost either...
< $10 a year
or
$35 a year

What's the difference?

math dictates that the difference is > $25 a year.

What do you get for that difference though? That's the question!

A most awesome feeling of getting ripped off.

.com, .net, .us, .de, .pl, .tk, .org

Guess which are the most expensive...

Well, I spent a lot of time researching domain name registrars.  Got my .net and .com name for 8 bux a pop.  Apparantly, the difference between $10 and $35 registrations is just how ripped off you want to be.
Btw, got my registration from www.dynadot.com  Highly reccomended.

If the OP was refering to price differences between different domain types as >>5 suggests, the top level domains that are usually the cheapest of the lot is because most of the namespace and common word choices are taken. The newer domain types are typically more expensive as they are considered "premium" to a certain degree and have a considerable larger domain namespace that remains untaken.

Also, you gotta look at the features they offer.

I'm sure the more expensive domains offer shit like webspace, forwarding, email, and tech support.

While the cheaper domains would only be a redirect. You'll have to find your own webspace, et al.

The less you pay the less ownership of the domain you get.

>>8 and >>9 are not necessarily true if you buy a domain name from a registrar instead of through a web hosting provider. Web hosting providers however, are known to play dirty tricks such as the one >>9 suggests.

I was referring to the price differences between different registrars actually.

I mean, what's the difference between http://www.dynadot.com $ 8 and http://www.itsyourdomain.com/ $15?  It's really just a difference of how much you're paying them to spend on marketing.  Domain name registration isn't something that you want 'features' with.  It's just buying the name.  Getting DNS with the service is nice, but there's free DNS service out there.

Don't change these.
