So what is everyones problem with Dells? I have a Dell and it's never caused me any pain so why does everyone else seem to hate them?

Because they're popular.

Because they are filled with spyware and sometimes hard to upgrade.

so basically only tech junkies who love to compensate for their tiny penises by upgrading their PC's every couple of weeks hate Dell because it's difficult to upgrade one?

dells are almost impossible to upgrade. that and all of their parts are subpar, and their ram really sucks. if you want to upgrade a dell computer, it must be with dell parts.

unless you're planning on buying a new computer every 2-3 years, i suggest you build your own and learn how computers work.

if you are an inexperienced computer user, buy a dell/falcon midwest/whatever .. anything else is too hard
if you are an inexerienced computer user but like to have value for money, pay a knowledgeable friend to spec out and build a PC for you <warning you wont have reliable tech support.. unless hes is really smart and likes mucking around with stuff>
if you are an experienced computer user, why are you asking this question.. build it yourself and enjoy the fruits of your labor knowing you got more for paying less

Dells are great! the problem is people, and usually their choice of the bottom of the barrel $300 crap computer. Dell also hasn't used propritary parts for years, around 3-5 years ago.

But I agree, Dell's are for "average six-pack joe"

dells are fine. just don't expect to use it for any good gaming.
ever see a Dell GX1? funky little thing snaps all together with one screw for the motherboard, one fot the HDD, and another in the power supply. everything just has clips and such.

Other than that, they're great!

OEMs like Dell use shit parts, and put little to no cooling in. And when they DO use cooling, they still manage to do it as if they really didn't want to.
We recently purchased from Dell a machine to provide a W2003 AD server. It came with a HT Xeon in it, which is cooled only by a HS. The case cooling is a pair of 120mm fans, but the one in the front does NOTHING because the Dell tards put a massive plastic shroud in there that keeps the air in the bottom of the case, away from things that need the airflow like the CPU, chipset, RAM. When we pay several grand for a server-machine, it would be nice if Dell could maybe spend the miniscule amount of money to cool it properly.
Why use shitty parts and no cooling? So the damn things won't last, and you'll come running back for another one in two years.

Which is why all new computers here that will be expected to handle something more intensive than speadsheets being edited by generic office people are designed by me, and bought piece by piece on newegg/zzf/frozenCPU, then assebled by me by hand. Better performance for less.

in all fairness, it should be mentioned that all oems do this, like gateway, hp, the former compaq, etc. not just dell.

i remember my old compaq presario 7470 - fuckin' 175w psu ... and this el cheapo 500Mhz Celeron hp computer i have now, 100w psu ... tsk tsk tsk ...

I can also corroborate that, in my experience, every prebuilt desktop machine I've ever seen (never owned one) has been, at its core, more or less a piece of shit. Does anyone remember the late 90s Compaq Presarios? Harder to get into than the original Mac, I swear to fucking God.
Ironically, best prebuilt I've ever owned is an eMachines laptop. Shitty specs, but it was made to survive outer space.

I usually see branded computers with good processors because people is stupid enough to think you can measure a computer in megahurtz, but they come with a simple, integrated graphics adapter and not enough RAM. The typical computer is like:

Pentium 4 3000 mega hurtz durr durrr
<small>512 MB RAM</small>
128 MB graphics card megs megs megs durr durr
<small>shared</small>
Shitty multimedia keyboard
Windows XP
<small>Complete with lots of bloated shit so your 512 MB RAM feel even smaller</small>

Then people buy it and wonder why are things slow. Hey I have three thousand mega hurtz, and 128 megs graphics!!!!111
