Mini computer

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-23 20:40

Since my hardcore gaming days are over I'm looking to downsize and use my space more efficently. I'm basically looking for a mini computer like the MiniMac except not mac. I've looked around and there seem to be a fair amount of barebones systems, most of them compatible with the pentium M from what I have seen. Then there's also the route of buying a mini motherboard but that would mean I'd have to make some kind of box for it myself and that seems like too much hassle.

What I want to know is if anyone has any experience with mini computers and can recommend me anything. I'm mostly going to use it for surfing, watching movies and some sequencing/not so reasource heavy audio stuff. Needs to have usb and firewire but I assume most of them has nowadays.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Not that I like Apple, but "Mac mini".

miniATX will have few PCI slots and might not even have AGP.
microATX will likely have integrated video and a passively cooled CPU.
Why not just be lazy and get a laptop? w/dock

you are fucking stupid, just buy a fucking mac and put windows on it and go be a fuck bitch in the corner and dont ask stupid questions, and why would you buy anything other than a mac or linux box anyhow?

stupid fuck miniATX does carry either 1AGP + 1PCI or 1 16xPCIexpress + 1PCI. Havent you looked at shuttle?

Shuffles fucking suck ASS.
Heating problems, propretary bullshit worse than dell, and shitty drivers.

Build your own with a mini case.

fuck you, shithead. yeah, 'cause shuttle's the ONLY brand that makes miniATX.
i said "PCI slotS" which includes the variant PCIe, which is just an implementation of PCI, assface.  Or is that too difficult for you to understand, retard?
OP said his "hardcore gaming days are over" so he's probably got a few AGP cards to rollback to, halfwit.  He'd be wise not to stick some hot-running, power-hungry PCIe card in a shuttle case that already overheats and has a pussy PSU, cocksucker.
Get bent, shuttlebitch.

I suppose I could but it would cost more and I'd have to get a screen and a decent keyboard anyway. And I don't really need a laptop right now.

I thought linux was an os.

I've looked at the Aopen XC Cube Mini MZ855-II and it seems to have everything I'm looking for. It's small and quiet, has an external psu (only 150W though). 1 low profile agp4x slot which means I won't be able to use my old card in it but there are a bunch of cheap low profile agp 8x cards to be found. Can I use these in the 4x slot?
It also has a low profile pci slot, room for 1 hardrive and 1 dvd burner. A bunch of usb and firewire ports and a memory card reader!

Thoughts?

I thought linux was an os.
GNU is your OS and Linux is its kernel. Hence the GNU/Linux system.

U R Rite.

Q: What do you call a GNU/Linux system with no GNU (glibc, fileutils, sysutils, etc)?

A: A brick.

With no GNU? I call it Windows lol

Why are your "hardcore gaming days" over anyway, man?

Because there are no more hardcore games. Just the same title being republished again and again with better graphics (I'm looking at you Carmack.)

http://www.mini-itx.com/ they sell mini and now nano-itx motherboards, cases, etc and even have pre-built systems for sale

or i could sell you an old pentium desktop, they're pretty space conserving, and totally silent! ししし

GNU provides the compilers, tools, and libraries whereas Linux/BSD/HURD acts as the kernel. It is with these two halves combined that you have an operating system, not with just one or the other. There is nothing 'operating' about a set of tools w/o a kernel to work with.

Bah, we call it just Linux

GNU/Linux!

BSD provides it's own libc, and much of the user tools (ls, tar, etc) provided are likewise mostly BSD tools. This is different from GNU/Linux and GNU where the libc *and* user tools as gnu along with the kernel.

Under BSD, the main thing that's GNU and included in the standard base is compression and the compiler; on NetBSD you have to specify that you want the compiler tools; if you just install the base OS it's mostly BSD licenced.

Which is why it's NetBSD instead of GNU/NetBSD.
