Desktop Themes

Hey guys im been looking to try to customize my desktop for awhile now, but the problem is which and how.

Desktop X? Windowsblinds?

which ones are better, and are there any guides out there to make a really nice desktop?

Im getting bored of the ol' XP theme :/

Set the classic theme, go services.msc , disable the themes services, win performance, save screen space, stop wanking off to what's outside applications, focus on what you really need to do.

actually its faster with themes, because with them the gui is rendered on the gpu, instaed the cpu.

Google and use your head. The Neowin one will work then get regular StyleXP themes and put them in a specific folder in Windows directory then select them in desktop dislay properties.

This is much more efficient than using StyleXP itself because StyleXP applies the theme to the RAM while patching the uxtheme.dll allows you to use the style from disk.

i did what you said (patched the dll and all) but when i try to use a theme i downloaded it just looks like the windows classic theme just with a new WP and a new cursor/

what am i doing wrong?

Sure that's the right theme? Why would it change the wallpaper and cursor? Make sure uou get "Visual Styles". They're .msstyle files that you place in your X:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes folder. You select them from the Desktop Display properties under appearance.

Make sure you return to your old Windows XP theme first before doing this.

i have copied all the msstyles into that folder, but under the windows and buttons menu i only have Windows XP and Windows Classic.

The msstyles shouldn't be all out. They should each be in the folder they came in. Just make a folder for each msstyle with exactly the same name (without the extension) and put one in each. They should've also come with a shell folder in each. If it still doesn't show, make sure the uxtheme.dll is patched well.
