Unix is much too hard if you're new to computers or to alternate OSes. Personally, I'd recommend you start off using Ubuntu. It's arguably the easiest to install, and it has a great user community too. (you can get it from http://www.ubuntulinux.org a nd then you'll want to go to the forums at http://www.ubuntuforums.org).

I've been using Gentoo from stage 1 for quite some time and it works for me. I can make all things faster with my custom CFLAGS, nobody else is wise enough to compile with these flags it seems. However, any real Gentoo user will realize it's all about the USE flags.
