Antivirus & other apps: free options?

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-19 2:29

I recently reformatted my computer. There are several apps I need to reinstall that I was somewhat disatisfied with the old programs I was using. Among these are Antivirus and disc burning software (both CD and DVD).

For antivirus, I used to have Norton's Antivirus 2004 Professional installed, but I didn't much like it. Too bulky, among other things. Not to mention that the installation and extensive updating procedure makes me reboot every time some item is updated, which leads to around 5 or 6 complete restarts. I'm looking for a good, free alternative. I've already tried AVG Free edition in the past, but I don't like that much either. I haven't for the life of me been able to disable automatic full-system scans, and they kept happening when I was in the middle of a gaming session, bogging down my performance. What program would you all suggest?

I used to use Nero for CD burning, but the latest edition suffers from being very bulky, and having some retarded extra "features" that constantly run in the background and take up far more resources than I'd like. I'd prefer something with a similar level of versatility, but I really don't use it for much beyond burning data CDs. What would be a good substitute?

Lastly, I need a good disk defragmenting app. The default windows one keeps locking up partway through the process when I try to defragment one of my extra storage drives.

Thanks for any help you can give!

The only free antivirus software that I know of is clamwin, but I wouldn't bet my life on it finding a virus.

Burning: Burnatonce, HT Fireman
Anti-Virus: Avast, AVG, BitDefender, ClamWin

Oh, and the obligatory "USE LINUX LOL".

Don't change these.
