fixmbr vs fdisk /mbr

Had a dualboot laptop system where WinXP was installed first then Linux. Have only one HD on the system. Had to get rid of Linux to regain needed space. Did research on the Internet as to not screw myself over. Found many strange answers most common was "use fixmbr" and then it was followed by "that doesn't work use fdisk /mbr". The question then is which works? Many people claim fixmbr will make neither boot.

What are the conditions that will make fixmbr fail?

I settled for fixmbr and it seems to have worked just fine.

Use fixmbr... fixmbr never did anything for me though. I think fdisk /mbr doesn't work with Windows NT, but I may very well be wrong.

I am totally guessing on this one but you should try fixmbr first, 'fdisk /mbr' sounds as though it would format the portion of the HD (hdx0) where the boot loader is stored in case you have trouble overwriting the older one with the fixmbr command.

Keep in mind, I'm guessing.

Why not just keep using Grub to boot winders?

From my experience I can tell you MBR and boot sector are made of panic and fuck up; the least you touch them the better.
