boot error(?)

hay guys

i have an amd 2500 xp-m and a soltek 75frn2-l running at 2.4mhz (200x12) with 512 megs of ram running in dual channel.  I've had this setup for about a year and a half now, with no major problems, until today.  For some reason, i cant get past the boot screen with any other bios configuration other than the optimized defaults: 600mhz, 100x6.

Trying to boot with any other config and my computer hangs during post, followed by a short beep every 4 seconds. is something wrong with my mobo? psu?

pleaze halp :(

what about the fail-safe ones?
at what stage during POST does it hang? before or after ATA(PI)?

failsafe defaults yield the same result :/
and it hangs before ata(pi)

My PC was hanging at the WinXP Boot screen, I had to unplug one of my harddrives, then it would start. To get the drive reading again, I plugged it back in (While PC is on) after WinXp started up and made Device Manager Scan for Hardware.

Try messing the hardware (Unplugging a drive, testing every one until you find the problem).

bad power supply?

Bad idea. Hardware is not supposed te be plugged/unplugged while the power is on. Typically this breaks stuff. Frankly, I dunno why you got so lucky.

Awesome that it worked. You could've easily crashed your hard disk and motherboard. Don't do that.

Uhhhh, was it USB or otherwise external?

My best guess is bad RAM or your CPU died. Or the BIOS got seriously corrupted. Try a different RAM/CPU/Motherboard

i think i may have narrowed the problem down to a corrupt bios chip.  Will simply reflashing it fix it? or will that fuck things up even more.

If the BIOS can be reflashed, then that should be fine as long as you flash an appropriate brand BIOS
