Shell Replacement

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-16 17:56

Anyone have any opinions on the Shell replacements out and about?

I tried Aston but it was too limiting. Then I tried Litestep but it seems alot of sites are down. It's been hard to get started in it so I can make my own themes.

Are there any others?

If you aren't afraid of editing configuration files manually, bblean.

I'm not afraid. I love to actually. If I could figure out what all the shit in litestep meant id configure that. But since I cannot.. litestep causes me nothing but grief.

Would bblean allow you to do something like have transparent buttons that expand to the left or right to show more buttons that open up things?

So it would end up being

Programs - Box 1 - box 2 - box 3
|
Shortcuts - Box 4 - Box 5 - Box 6

and so on..

I've used geoShell for years, it's awesome. Although I still need to try bblean sometime.

Any of these support png images with transparency? Say I want a transparent taskbar or menus. Or no taskbar at all and just a start menu.

Can any shell do this?

GeoShell had transparency settings and bmp support with single bit transparency last I checked. And you can have as many bars as you want, placed anywhere, with pretty much anything on them.

Lighttek's TALISMAN is the best.

black box lite. minimalist, very quick, has a few quirks, but altogether good, if you are into retro/minimalist-style.

The transparency guy: stop wanking to transparent bullshit, it'll waste your CPU while not adding any functionality. Concentrate on what you need to do.

I'm looking for a shell repleacement too, but i'm looking for something that won't eat as much CPU as the default win shell, and the games won't crash either. Tried using: Talisman (killed too many memory), bbLean, BlackBox (both crashed when i started a game).
i don't mind writing codes, as long as there's a sample for it :D

you know, it's OK to be a geek and appreciate good aesthetics in your interface.

Maybe he just wanted it to look nice. Just because I'm into computers doesn't mean I want my gui to look as spartan as possible.

Well, that's a new for me.. bblean never crashed a game on me... well, who knows, it did kill some shit apps...

I had it my pc (before my lapy) and sadly 90% of the games crashed, and on top of that some of my settings weren't saved (edited the config files myself, and they weren't even read-only). Although i personaly liked it :D

Samurize isn't a shell replacement, you idiot. Samurize is just a system monitoring tool with a little scripting ability.

Don't change these.
