So I'm attempting to either convert a .wmv to .avi, or better yet convert a clip from the .wmv to gif. Is their a way to do this without a giant ''THIS IS RUNNING IN TRIAL MODE'' message from the free converter I used?

yeah goto your fav torrent site and d/l it there. Or if you want to do it legally, use virtual dub to open the avi file and caputer the frame one by one

i know how to make a gif from an avi. the file i have is a wmv, i need to convert THAT to either avi or gif.
if not, several more hours in google may be in your future. virtual dub can save image dumps or avi's, but support to open wmv's and such was removed as per microsoft request as of v1.3d. however, you may be able to find an older version. best of luck to you.

no one buys software. especially not to do something as simple as turning a movie file (no matter the format) into a gif should be.

Actually pay for patterns of ones and zeros on a piece of plastic? You're crazy.

maybe try googling for a player that plays wmv's and supports image dumps? slow going for gifmaking, but doable.

I usually load the file into Virtual Dub, crop the part of the clip I want to make into a gif (the part on the timeline) and output the frames. Then I disregard 90% of the frames and only keep every 10th. I then use a gif program like Animation Shop to create the gif, resize, crop etc as required.
