If you look closely you will see that three of the connections are now brown.  Hurray!

Full story - About three days ago I was playing a game when the screen basically became extremely distorted with small lines of various colors.  I rebooted hoping it was a one time problem.  Alas, to my misfourtune it was not.  I switched to my onboard video card (GeForce MX400).  Besides terrible framerates it seems as though there were no further problems with my computer.

Until the next day anyways.  When I awoke I turned my computer on to check email and some news.  Everything was fine for about 5 minutes until my new problem happened.  The only way I can describe it is as though my computer turned off for a fraction of a second and then back on, only it didn't realize it was still on.  Whatever I was doing was frozen on the screen.  I spent a few hours trying to figure out was wrong ( I narrowed down the problem to the Power spply or the Northbridge) and eventually decided to do a complete disassemble/reassemble of the computer.  What I found is that which is shown in the two linked pictures.  I'm assuming the something in my 9800pro became fryed from what you see in those two pictures.  It seems as though the wave of electronic death only passed through the 12V wires (yellow); other voltage wires seem to be unaffected.  Also only hardware that actually used 12V seem to have been affected.  My harddrives and cd-roms are intact as well as my CPU, RAM and all my fans.

Now, onto tomorrow!  So here I am, sitting at a desk typing on my laptop wondering what I shall do to remedy this situation.  I think, "Hrm, I have only a few hundred dollars, however am I going to get this computer in working shape" I have: my CPU- AMD XP 3200+ barton core (400FSB), RAM- 2 X  DDR400 (3200) 512MB each, Case- awesome, And my hard drives and CPU's.

Help me decide.  Should I get another nForce2 mother board and continue using my current CPU, or use the situation to upgrade?  Consider this: I have little money, 300-500 dollars to spare, and I will also need a new video card (hopefully an upgrade from a ATI9800pro)

Hmm.... you can try to upgrade, but looking at the budget it'll be a tight stretch. If you're upgrading I suppose you want athlon 64 pci-express mobo and a new PSU?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127215 ABIT AN8-V ATX AMD ~$86
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537 Athlon 64 3ghz Venice ~ $114
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127095 MSI geeforce 7600gt ~$180 ($160 with $20 mail in rebate)

For gfx I suppose you can try either 6800gt or the 7600gt.

Sounds to me like you should just replace the power supply. Then check to see if your 9800Pro still works. You won't know for sure without a working PS. It may have been the mo0therboard that caused the power surge, but PS is more likely.

This is true.  I was planning on seeing if I could bring the remains my my computer to a friend's house to test if the motherboard and video card are still alive.  It would be nice if only the Powersupply was bunked.

do not sign your posts on 4chan or you will not get any more help from Anonymous. Filling in the name field is bad enough

Your motherboard is fucked, don't even bother testing it. The video card might not be fucked up, though. Give that a shot, but not in your friend's PC (a power short in a pci slot can do bad things to a motherboard), try using an older shitbox

Yeah, some PSUs don't go as spectacularly as some of the images we've had in /g/. Sparks flying, holes in the motherboard, blowing the circuit breaker in your house, etc.

The mobo is still fucked, like >>5 said.
