Get the Combined Community Codec Pack. Includes all your needed codecs and two players.

includes ffdshow as a h264 player. If you want to be up-to-date:
http://x264.nl/  has the latest stable build of ffdshow + installer without cccp.

Yeah, good luck with that, when it becomes the standard for a whole lot of things such as TV, DVD, as well as a huge amount of internet-obtained stuff.

HD-DVD/Blu Ray even.

h264 won't be the standard for TV. The whole point of h264 is compression so the only media it will benefit are those with limited capacities like the internet and video files.

In what way does TV not have limited capabilities? It's all about fitting as much data down a limited bandwidth, as with the internet and storage media. I'm talking HDTV here anyway, which is quite likely to use H.264... so basically, if anyone's trying to 'avoid it like the plague' they'll eventually have to succumb to its charms, so might as well suck it up now.

'avoiding things like the plague' because they're popular just makes you look like a total fucktard.

Don't change these.
