Antivirus Software

Name: The Great Space Coaster 2006-04-26 17:34

Hey, everyone. I know maybe 4chan isn't the best place to ask but, in hopes of actually finding a serious answer, here's my question:

I've had Panda Antivirus installed in my computer for ages now. I don't complain: it's a nice AV and all but I do want to know if there's a better antivirus out there that helps me the same or even more than how this ol' geezer software has so far.

What's the best antivirus program for you? What do you use and why do you like it? I seriously need some pointers in order to decide if I keep this one or go for another one.

Thanks very much for the advice.

I'd stay with Panda and wouldn't care much about the issue. If you know what you're doing the chances of getting virused are slim.

Yourself.

Thank you very much. I am always extra careful, but it doesn't hurt to have a second opinion on your skills. :3

Panda it is, then. Panda it is.

don't worry about it, just keep your virus definitions updated. The only real reason to have a virus scanner if you actually know what you're doing is to be able to repair (or rule out the possibility of) a virus if your computer fucks up and your internet gets hosed.

Try AVG.  It's good, has constant updates, and is free.

Common sense doesn't protect you from browser exploits. Don't be retarded.

Panda and the freeware is mostly shit. What's the point of using an AV if its detection isn't perfect, unless you're poor?

KAV or NOD32.

Yeah, because KAV and NOD32 are perfect.

No antivirus is 'perfect.' Antivirus exists to provide a "reasonable measure of protection." If NOD will detect & clean (arbitrary numbers here) 97% of viruses and AVG Free will do 92% versus 0% for nothing then you are still reasonably safe. Your overall chance of having anything serious happen is (chance of encounter virus)(1 - detection rate)(chance virus is dangerous).

Overall if you prefer that sliver of peace of mind then crack/buy NOD32 but if convenience is more important then get AVG Free.

Those statistics are bullshit and not valid in a real world environment. I execute and encounter page viruses daily, and I see AVG letting shit slip through daily for people.

>>8
As close to perfect as you're going to get. What is Panda striving for? Beating Symantec? And AVG? It's free for a reason.

What the hell are 'page viruses'?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-27 23:46

>>10
Yeah, what are page viruses?
And what the hell are you doing that you encounter viruses daily? Downlaod UltiomateHAxxor_WaREZ0101.zip.exe or Visual_Basic_6_(100kb).exe much?

lol
Most people don't know how to analyse their AV, but I can tell you I got a positive experience with Norton, I downloaded a 0day exploit for Internet Explorer (createTextRange), and when opening in Firefox Norton's heuristics blocked it, without having it's signs yet latter that day I got the signs (it detects some shellcode).
On another day it didn't detect an Instant messenger virus, only also later that day (heuristics failed), but was an easy to spot virus without malicious code, only ads.
Norton can be free for 6 days throught the Google Pack, well after that your windows should be fkd up enough to make a reinstall ;P
Adaware on the other hand doesn't do a shit, instead it gives you warnings about inocent cookies.
I'm still reviewing my antivirus so I don't know nothing else. I didn't use an antivirus for years, I've been using Linux :P

Yeah, Linux' lack of software is so extreme it doesn't even have viruses

Cute troll.

How fucking retarded. It's not the lack of software (??WTF?? there's ton of shit for linux, even if it __is__ shit...); it's the lack of exposure/market penetration which is why it doesn't have virii.

"zOMG what if I wrote a virus and no one showed up??!?!!" --loonix ha}{0r

You use Windows, don't you?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-28 17:00

Linux has a lot of exploits every day, the diference is that windows exploits are automated... The patching time is also more or less the same. But the Linux boxes have the powerfull security of the BSD code in it's software, and most of them are customized, compiled in the box or recompiled and updated every day in all it's software. That's why it's hard to automate exploits in linux.

I would keep an eye on Avast! Antivirus PE aswell.
But as many here have earlready said, you are one of the best antivirus software there is.
However you should always have a firewall to acompany your AV.
