my laptop fan randomly turns off and on

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-25 5:23

This wouldn't be a problem but I use it for gaming, and whenever the fans turns off or on it creates lag for about 2-4 seconds. I googled and tried researching, but i'm not sure what exactly the problem is.

The fan only really works when i play games or putting a lot of stress on the cpu. It will only stay on for maybe a minute at most and will continue to go on and off for the duration of my playing time. It only recently started doing this.

here's all the info I know about this laptop.
Compaq presario 2200 1.4ghz 512mb ram. Intel Celeron running win xp pro sp2

would the Intel Extreme graphics controller properties help? because i dunno anything about the settings.

Any info on this would be appreciated. thanks.

Check your BIOS to see if it uses Q-Fan/cool-n-quiet/smart fan control or something like that. Try disabling this feature. These mobo features are supposed to minimize noise by only using fans as much as they are needed, but are often buggy, and motherboard voltage/temp reading are never perfectly accurate (you can test this yourself with a VOM) The downside is that the fan would be on all the time.

It is fucking supposed to do that.  Mine does that all the time.  It is so that you don't have a fuck load of fan noise and battery drainage on a device that's designed to be portable.  If it is running all the time, then I would be more worried hoenstly.

Yes, but fans take time to start cooling an overheating processor, the speed will also be throttled back, creating lag. If >>1 is running off mains power, has no issues with the noise, and needs maximum performance, the fan should always be running. What the laptop is 'supposed to do' isn't necessarilly what every user wants it to do.
Also, make sure the laptop's vents are not blocked - putting it on a rigid, flat surface such as a table or large hardback book should suffice.
