What is the most likely cause of random rebooting? Should I replace the power supply?

I had it happen to this machine recently, and a format/reinstall of Windows fixed it.

probably a faulty power flow. either the power supply is failing, the house current is failing, a cord is loose, or the motherboard itself is toasty.

pretty much impossible. if everything else works fine, but the system still fails, it's possibly the motherboard. but possibly not.

Could also just be Windows XP bluescreening, since XP reboots immediately when that happens unless you've changed an option somewhere.

I don't see how the software could be a problem. I mean it's not like anyone would design an OS that reboots at random.

Why not the RAM? A broken sector within the ram could cause a fault and cause the computer to hang or even reboot.

I hate winders as much as the next lunix zealot, but I wouldn't pin this one on MS. My brother has this problem (his is set to bluescreen rather than reboot) and we recently tried installing Mepis to see if it would help. It froze a couple of minutes after I launched tuxracer.

Had the same problem on my prebuild system, couldn't keep it up for more than 3 days. There was a stock 200W powersupply on it, replaced with a more powerful one and now it's stable as a rock.
