Can't you just use google? there's like tons of overclocking tutorial.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-24 21:27

Is overclocking really all that useful? It seems like something done only by people who buy neon lights for their computer cases and connect garden hoses to their water cooling systems.

It used to be useful. Nowadays, well... it's a ricer thing.

he just wants a faster comp............

Not if you know what you're doing.

A friend of mine overclocked his system from 1.5ghz to 2.2ghz.

it's gonna overheat and blow up next week.

And the point of that was what exactly?

The only people who really need a speed boost nowadays are precisely the folks who can't afford instability.

Don't overclock it. Use passive cooling and enjoy a completely silent computer.

Put it in a closet and enjoy a completely silent computer.

I really don't recommend it. You need good cooling, which you'll never find for the type of socket set you are using since no heatsink currently sold will likely attatch to the motherboard. Upgrade time. Overclocking works, but you need have good cooling.

If you do find a quality heatsink and fan for this thing, then here is how you would overclock it:

Download Prime 95, install it. (ask google/scroogle/yahoo where to find it)
Reboot, go into BIOS settings, take note of your RAM and FSB speeds.
If your mutiplier is not locked, increase the multiplier, save your settings, reboot. If not, use a divider to underclock your RAM, then increase the FSB.
If/when windows loads, and it was a small increase, you are likely okay. Try a larger increase.
If it was a large increase, run a torture test in Prime 95 for as long as you can, until you either need to use the computer, or it errors out.
If it errors out, lower the speed. If it goes for at least 24-48 hours, you likely have a stable overclock.
I can't give more specific details on how to change the speeds (CPU frequency or FSB frequency) because I do not know what motherboard/BIOS you have.

He has had the system running like that for about half a year now, has never crashed either.

He did that cause he doesn't have the money for a really high end system and he is a hardware freak.
He has volt-modded everything.
His RAM and graphics card are both over-clocked also. Not sure how much with those, but they are a huge boost, I know that.

Well it being a slot processor is probably going to make it hard to get new cooling, so that's a minus.
To be honest unless you can find a way to get a BIG speed increase, it's not really worth it. If, on the other hand, you just want to overclock for the sheer hell of it, go for it, but be aware it could break your processor. Can't help much on specifics mind.

Indeed, for an old computer that would seem like a better idea, an older processor should work well with passive cooling, but of course there's the power supply and drives to consider - in my desktop the noisiest component by far is the optical drive.

Impressive :)

Passive PS are available up to 120 wats. The optical drive is only an occasional problem anyway. And 2.5 inch HD's can be very quiet. Alternatively, a (passive) flash drive can be used.

Overclocking a slot-1 400mhz P2 is basically impossible besides. They were top of the line back then, and as such you really couldn't get more than a couple of tens of MHz extra on top.

Also, electricity bills and so forth. Toss that one at the recycling center, or make a necklace out of it or something.
