S.M.A.R.T. obliterated by HD corruption?

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-22 1:40

I have a Western Digital 120 GB HD(WDC WD1200JB) that I have used for the past few years sliced into 3 partitions. Recently it decided to cough up header errors across all 3 partitions which pushed me towards buying 2 new HDs(120 GB Seagate Barracudas). Unfortunately as I was formatting the new HDs in OS 10.4, my WD ate itself for the 19th time(i have kept track over the years) thus warranting a session with DiskWarrior 2 and Disk First Aid(OS 9) and ending in failure. I tried using a Quantum Bigfoot TS HD(posted pic on /g/ - bought @ thrift store for $1) but it died while installing the BSD Subsystem. Shortly after I found out both Seagates were defective and promptly returned them leaving me stranded on my PC for a few days. Yesterday, i went to Wal-Mart to buy a newer DVD burner(Sony DRU-810A) and a Western Digital 80 GB HD both for $151(69.99 each) and managed to install OS 10.4 without no problems. For the past couple of hours I managed to save only the most important files(4chan pics and some animu) and finally zero out the WD HD for the first time in 3 years. I have had to recover its directory for the 3 partitiions so many times with DiskWarrior 3 I didnt bother keeping count after the 30th time over the past 3 years. If it wasnt partitioned as I did when I got it, my data would have been lost a long time ago(moving my OS 9.2 System Folder from HD to HD = WIN!)

Problem - Why the fucking hell is it no longer showing the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility when It used to since I started using OS X? Been using OS X since 10.2, 10.3 brought S.M.A.R.T. monitoring within Disk Utility, and 10.4 was the first Apple OS distributed via DVD.
