My mum has gotten my grandma a computer and an internet. I'm visiting for the weekend, and I've been informed that I'm going to set up antivirus, firewall, email etc. I assume it's running XP, although I haven't had a look yet.
Shall I take this opportunity to install SuSE? I don't think she's had time to get particularly attached to her current OS. She uses winders at work, but does nothing but use Sage, Minesweeper and occasionally notepad.

If grandma doesn't mind, go for it. If it's setup correctly, you won't need to deal with malware. If you have the skills, you can even do remote administration whenever grandma needs help.

She'll be pissed if you linstall Linus.

so far as i'm concerned, if someone doesn't know enough about computers to install their own linux, they shouldn't be using linux. windows may suck, but it was designed for people who can't tell the difference between megabytes, megahertz, and monitors.

Most winders users don't know enough to install winders. They definitely don't know how to install a firewall, antivirus and not believe emails that tell them they have won a million dollars and a lifetime's supply of porn.

Better leave her windows be, linux isn't really meant for people who are not particulary good with computers.

OK, having asked your advice I'm gonna ignore it because you're not telling me what I want to hear. She'll be running Suse before the weekend is out.

You sound like such an arrogant fucking bastard.
>>9 make sure you set it to dual boot. that way, when you get complaints about windows programs not being able to run, it's easy to change to windows

you need to realize that, as opposed to windows, on linux there IS a difference between "using" and "administrating"
grandma won't be doing any administration herself anyway, but call for help, and then on linux her problems can be conveniently fixed via ssh
