Setting up a computer as a router

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-10 2:44

I haven't had much luck looking through google for this, so I thought I'd ask here.

Due to me not wanting to buy a router/switch, is it tough to set up a computer that is connected directly to my DSL modem, then serves files & internet connection through a second network card to my other computer? Would simply "setting up a home network" share internet connectability?

(I have enough network cards, cables, and a crossover cable)

Thanks.

Yes. It's pretty simple, really. You only need to run the network setup wizard on both machines and you're good to go.

OK Correct me anyone if I am wrong but this is how you would do it with winxp:

1)Install 2 network cards on the computer you want to share the connection with.
2) Connect one to your modem with a straight though networking cable.
3) connect other computer to your other NIC, using CROSSOVER.
4) Bridge connection in network settings, ctrl+click the 2 NICS right click and say "bridge"
5)???
6) PROFIT!

PS.
I dont think this would work if you are doing more than 1 pc, ie hooking up a switch.  If you want to do that, you would probably have to find a free DHCP server for windows and go from there.  Hope this helps.
