My computer won't turn on anymore.

Name: Kat_Ears_Kahrain 2006-04-06 18:51

The other day, my computer ceased functioning just shortly after turning it on. The little light on the board wouldn't even come on. Now it won't even turn on.
Thought it was the power supply gone dead, so I replaced that today. But it still won't turn on. No sound out of it what-so-ever. No hum, click, or beep. The little light on the board does come on with the new power supply though.
I'd like to have ideas so I can try and fix it.
Haven't opened it in weeks, so I don't think that I killed the Motherboard. The new power supply does work. So it can't be that anymore.

assuming you're competent enough to check that the power outlet actually works, the cord actually works, the cord is actually connected, the power bar (if relevant) works, and the master power switch on your power supply is on and set to proper house voltage, you probably just ended up with a dead motherboard.

most likely just plain old age or normal hardware failure, but i'd double check any cooling systems you have running.  overheating can fry almost anything if you don't realize it's happening for extended periods.  i've seen more than one motherboard lost to no more than a dead fan.

Could it be possible that it's just a dead BIOS battery?

Don't be an idiot. A dead battery doesn't stop a computer booting. You just get that "CMOS checksum error" on boot, and lose any BIOS settings different from the default. A computer's not like a car which won't start with a flat battery (unless it's a laptop with a flat battery not plugged into the mains, duh).

sounds like yer fan is dead, if its a commercial cheapy like emachine, thats normal, try replacing the fan, most computers will prevent booting if the fan isnt working, odd i know.

Don't change these.
