I'm looking for a good notebook for under $1000. I would like something with 1GB RAM and at least 2.0GHz processor, and can I get all this and still have decent battery life.
Does it exist?

I've heard of people getting Celeron machines for about $400. So yeah it's possible.

You're pushing it a bit price-wise for a 2GHz processor, unless you go with el cheapo crap brand laptops (don't). Bear in mind that Centrino-based laptops actually provide very good performance against their GHz figure (desktop Pentium 4s are pretty inefficient by clock GHz, so don't compare that with laptop performance). You might want to look at Mobile Sempron-based laptops as well. You should be able to find a good named brand (Toshiba, etc) 1.8GHz Centrino-based laptop with 1Gb for under $1000 fairly easily. You will be able to find laptops using desktop processors way faster than 2GHz for a lot less, but you won't get battery life anything like a Centrino-based system.
