Well recently I downloaded an HDD temp checker from the advice of my friend. It was running anywhere from 40-52C but suddenly i come back from school and its up 50-58C which i know isnt good and its almost CONSTANTLY at that temp WTFUX?! Maxtor6y160m0 is what i have (i think) ive only got the stock cooling fan and nothing else and no where else to stick a second fan due to the faggotry clamshell dell i have :/ (it opens like a clamshell) so any help?

Just make sure that the drive is mounted in an area with halfway decent airflow. Usually there are holes in the lower front for cool air to come into the case. Try and put it around there.

56 ºC is hot indeed, but I've seen worse. Try to keep them under 40 ºC though; get a better case with lots of fans or an HD fan if you need. Your data is worth the money.

Just mount a fan at the front of your computer so it blows air right at the hdd, drill some holes in the chassis, use some tape to fix the fan there, or mount it properly, whatever it takes. I am confident your motherboard has at least 1 extra fan connector which you can use (chassis fan, you can disconnect old one if you already have a chassis fan and it's at the back of computer, usually won't affect much) You really need to cool it somehow if it gets that hot.

How in the world did you manage to make it that hot anyways? Perhaps it is actually a malfunctioning heat sensor? I have a 160GB maxtor drive like yourself, sandwiched between a 60 and 120gb drives and it never goes above 27 degrees and even removing all ventilation it keeps under 40 so I find that extremely odd yours gets so hot.

Don't change these.
