IRC Problem

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-04 12:23

For some reason, when I use a torrent program, my IRC ping timeouts like crazy. So long as I continue talking in IRC, it maintains the connection, but if I idle for what seems to be a completely random amount of time, I get disconnected. I have no problem reconnecting, but it does not disconnect me immediately, IRC hangs for a while until I say something, then disconnects and reconnects immediately.

If it is of any importance, I am using a Linksys BEFW11s4 Wireless-B Router. I've tried changing torrent programs, but to no avail, the problem persists. It has been going on for quite a long time now, but I'm beginning to lose my patience with it.

do port forwarding ina ny hardware or software firewalls you may have

www.portforward.com

How exactly would that help?

Linksys and many other routers have issues with the huge amount of connections torrents make. See if there's thirdparty firmware for your router.

I don't want to do anything that could question the integrity of my internet connection, though. Is it safe?

Here's how I fixed it with mIRC.

/j #channel
/mode #channel +nRts
/timer 0 120 /msg #channel Ping-Pong

As you can see, it sends a Ping-Pong to #channel every two minutes. Therefor keeping the connection alive. It's a rather dirty fix though. You could also try a different IRC client.

I'll work with this solution, since I have a channel that I hang out in that isn't really much active conversation, and sending one omega symbol every 2 minutes shouldn't bother anyone.

Thanks.

Actually, people are often annoyed by automatic away messages and similar. A better answer might be to think of a non-intrusive command to run. For instance, a better command might be

/timer 0 120 /whois chanserv

If you are on Rogers or Shaw in Canada you will be disconnected all the time because they think you are using bittorrent. Get a better ISP.

I switched to the /whois, and I'm not in Canada. Problem solved, thanks.
