Because I am a sissy, I have not converted CDs and raw WAV files to MP3. What wold be the best program/settings to use for converting to MP3 without having to worry about loss of sound quality?

No program will convert to MP3 without loss of sound quality.
>>3 gives the best byte/quality tradeoff. Unless you're golden ears or have difficult material, it'll be transparent.
If it isn't, the next notch up is lame --alt-preset extreme, but it's highly unlikely you'll be able to tell the difference. Most people who do are suffering from placebo effect.
