Spilled drink on my keyboard...

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 22:18

Okay, I've got an old old (486cpu) computer with an old style keyboard connector in the back--and I spilled a sugar-free beverage on the keyboard. I tried to dry it out but I don't think I was thorough enough. Several keys stopped working while others performed fine, so I switched keyboards (yeah, I actually have another keyboard using the old connector), but they're both acting EXACTLY the same way... even after a cold reboot too.

What I'm wondering is not weather or not it's fixable or replaceble (because I plan on retiring this old unit soon anyway), but I am trying to determine exactly what has happened. Is it possible that a short from the liquid have spiked the board?

Sounds strange. If it had spiked the board, I'd guess nothing would work, not just some keys.

Try using a PS2 > USB adaptor to tell if it's the keyboard that's shot or the PS2 interface.

If it's the interface, you'll either need to find a replacement (where? I don't know) or switch to a USB keyboard.

I imagine that by "old old" he means DIN. (http://www.8bit-micro.com/images/5-pin-din.jpg)

So he'd just have to get a DIN>PS2 adapter and use that to try the keyboard elsewhere.

Make sure the motherboard didn't get wet, too, and that everything is completely dry before ruling out water.

Don't change these.
