If you live near a state-supported university, they might have regular surplus ssles. Of course, then you're at the mercy of what they have and don't want, but it can be cheap and sometimes quality stuff.

Some state universities sell off old computer hardware as surplus, too.
Last time I went to the local one, I saw an ancient (circa 1982) Hercules 8-bit ISA video card that had to be over a foot long. I was told that its impressive size was due to the fact that it had lots and lots of fonts and stuff stored on the chips covering both surfaces. They wanted $1.00 for it. When it was new it probably cost a healthy three-figure sum.
