Hey world4ch. Windows is now 2 years old and it's time for a reinstall.
If I back up everything on my 500GB External hard drive, when I reinstall windowzXP I just have to plug in my external hard drive and it'll work, right? I won't need to format or have anything deleted from it, right?

Your question doesn't make much sense.
Yes, if you back up your important files to an external drive, you shouldn't have to delete them to get to them later.
You'll want to reinstall programs, but you should be able to back up /some/ configurations. For example, if you copy the files from your old Firefox profile directory (if you use Firefox) into your new one (from hofw43hofh.profile to huadshsbg.profile) your Firefox settings should transfer.
Any data files (music, movies, etc) should transfer as usual.
Move your personal files away from your folders in %ProgramFiles% and "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings" (or your home dirs if you customized them), then delete the folders %ProgramFiles%, "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings", %SystemRoot% and all the files that aren't yours in %SystemDrive%\ . Then proceed to install Windows.
