I know you have good intentions, but Virtualdub works best for encoding video. Trying to do anything like editing the video or adding titles is a PITA.

If you're not a LEGAL EAGLE, go grab a torrent for Adobe Premiere.  It eats ram like a motherfucker, but it's pretty comprehensive.  Learning definitely required, so grab an eBook manual or something while you're at it.

I don't know how "in-depth" Windows Movie Maker is, but if you're doing simple stuff, Virtualdub MIGHT suffice.  Make your decision based on how complex your projects are.

VirtualDub - linear. Premiere = non-linear (multi-track).

Yes, Premiere is the most popular choice. In reality, it's an underdeveloped, unstable, memory hogging whore. But as it's the best and most comprehensive offer in the amateur class, it's a necessary evil.

For fancy stuff (needs more lensflare etc.) try After Effects. It's much more polished, but the learning curve is even steeper than with Premiere.

A problem of Adobe Premiere is it's Adobe software. Adobe software inherently sucks.

Don't change these.
