quick linux question

Ive been trying to install ubuntu on my hdd to dual boot with XP pro.  but when i try to resize my C: drive to make room for the new partition, i enter a valid value, and it stops for a second and then it takes me back to my hdd information and doesnt make the change.  I have a 250 GB SATA hdd and i was wondering if that had anything to do with it.

HOW did you try to change it? With the Installer???
If you want to resize a partition I would strongly recommend PartitionMagic or something like that!

when i try to make a partition ahead of time with partition magic, i try to get the ubuntu installer to use the partition i made.  and tell it not to use the c: but when i goto finish, it says that it will format any removed partitions and the selected ones.

Don't change these.
