opened suspicious file for fun!... need help!

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-14 0:19

as the subject says, in a moment of idiocy I opened a file that appeared on my computer. now after 2 hours I've been searching and deleting and using scanners and have only a couple problems left! :).... :(....

so my problem is I cant change my wallpaper from a solid color. basically all the options on the desktop tab are greyed out and I cant even change it to the default wallpapers.

any idea how I could fix this?

sincerely,
Anonymous

Get rid of Internet Explorer.
PROTIP: You don't "open" programs, you execute them.

You probably got clobbered by SpySheriff or one of its derivatives - that loves to disable wallpaper options so you get stuck with its "YOUR COMPUTAR IS DYING! LOL! PAY US!" wallpaper, and the damage it does often persists after removing it.

If you can't use System Restore (the best way to fix the problem), open up RegEdit (Start>run>regedit), and delete the following keys and all their sub-keys and values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Then reboot. Windows will repair itself and return to its default Active Desktop/wallpaper policies. The end!
