I hate having to waste space when burning my files to DVD, so can you recommend a good program for making AVI files smaller, preferrably to a size you decide?

Fail. RAR, ZIP and other archive formats suck at compressing already compressed data - you gain a couple of percent compression at best. >>1
VirtualDub. Re-encode the video and audio at a slightly lower bitrate, and you'll be able to fit more on a disc.

how about trying h264/x264
should reduce teh size to 100-1470MB
